About me

My name is Tammy Bruckerhoff, and I am honored to be your host.

My name is Tammy Bruckerhoff, and I am honored to be your host.

If you’ve been to Hermann, we may have already met.

You might know me as “Sugar Momma,” the owner of Sugar Momma’s Candies, Desserts, & Gifts on Market Street/Highway 19 in Hermann.  If you haven’t visited the shop, I hope you will.

I look forward to making your first visit the best it can be, and I hope you enjoy it so much that you will come back often. Thank you for choosing McKittrick Trailhead Inn.

History of McKittrick

Town Plat

The McKittrick town plat map is made up of nine blocks with Main Street & Walnut Street (originally Washington) as the primary commercial streets. The Missouri, Kansas, & Texas (MKT) Railroad line makes up the southern boundary of town.

The MKT Railroad

V.V. Masterson, in his 1988 book, The Katy Railroad & Last Frontier, states “Entry into St. Louis was achieved by the Katy’s taking over the operation of the Missouri, Kansas, & Eastern (MKE) Railroad. The MKT purchased the MKE in 1896 and merged with the company in 1987.

A Railroad Town

Small towns, such as McKittrick, were platted to support the steam engines that required refueling with water and coal at regular intervals. Generally considered to be a “railroad town,” owing its existence to railroad construction, the location of McKittrick may also have resulted from earlier development.

Founding

McKittrick was formed in 1895, and named after Thomas H. McKittrick, Sr., a St. Louis businessman, MKT Railroad financier, and investor.

Post Office

Before the city was even laid out, a post office opened in McKittrick in 1894. This post office served the community for many years, finally closing in 1967.

On the Map

Today, with a population of under 100, there is no post office in McKittrick, so our address is Hermann, Missouri, 65041.
